Recently members of Crew 13 got to participate in basic vehicle rescue training. Crew members were taught how to remove a windshield, and windows in a vehicle. They also had a front row seat to see how the firefighters use rescue tools to remove the doors and perform other operations at a vehicle accident.
As you clear the snow in your neighborhood, please remember to clear a path to the fire hydrants. By removing the ice and snow from around the hydrants you will assist the fire department in any emergency responses that would require the use of the hydrant.
We recommend that you clear 3 feet to all sides of the hydrant as well as a path to the street. Most hydrants are very close to the curb, but there are some in our area that are several feet away from the street so please clear a path all the way out to the street.
In November, members of Crew 13 learned about various types of fire extinguishers and how they are properly used. At the end of the lesson the Crew members were given the opportunity to practice using a fire extinguisher.
Last Wednesday evening Crew 13 met at Harrisburg Bureau of Fire station #2 on 16th Street. The focus of the evening was donning turn-out gear and members practiced putting on the gear in 60 seconds or less. During the evening there was also time for the group to explore and learn about Wagon 4 and Tower 1 that are housed at the station. Crew members learned about various types of equipment carried by each piece. At the end of the tour they were able to get in the bucket of the tower, and also get a sneak preview of this week’s activities by getting a quick demonstration on the fire extinguishers.
